They accumulated probates, letters of administration and related papers relating to their clients' interests in the course of their work. Sir John Conway Lloyd of Abercynrig (1878-1954), a public figure, was born on 18th April 1878 in Dinas Mansion, Brecknockshire. He was the son of Thomas Conway Lloyd and Katherine Eliza Campbell-Davys of Neuadd-Fawr, Llandovery. He married Marion Clive Jenkins in 1903, settled in Dinas, and took part in the public life of Brecknockshire. He was made Sheriff of Breconshire in 1906 and knighted in 1938. Tyr Eskir Dreddvyn and Tyr y Graig are situated in Llywel, Brecknockshire. Sarah Evans (1868-1948) of Ynisfaen, Llywel was married to Richard Watkins (d. 1937), a farmer, of Meity Isaf, Traianglaes in 1926. Thomas Jones of Glyncorrwg, Glamorgan (d. 1908) was a brewer and wine merchant. He owned properties in Glamorgan and Brecknockshire. Edward Dumaresq Thomas of Abergavenny Esq. married Violet Isabella Elliot Clare Ouchterlony (b.1849) in 1869. She was the daughter of Alice Trevor Ouchterlony of Tredillion Park, Abergavenny, and John Ouchterlony, a soldier in the Madras Engineers. Thomas parents were Ann Elizabeth and Rev. William Jones Thomas. In 1881, when he was in Columbo, Ceylon, Thomas married Anina Margaret of Llan Thomas of Hay, widow of Edward Lechmere Thomas of Lindoola, Ceylon. Edward Dumaresq Thomas brother was Evan Henry Thomas of Westwood Vicarage, Coventry, Clerk in Holy Orders and his nephew was David Williams Evan Thomas of Brecon, a solicitor. Thomas died 1 March 1911, had properties in the Federated Malay States (Malaysia) and Ceylon (Sri Lanka). Mary Llewellyn was married to James Davies Llewellyn of Gorphwysfa, Glamorgan, a surgeon. She died in 1897. Elsie Margaret Llewellyn of Brynhyfryd, Glamorgan (fl. 1908-1928) might have been her daughter. Her brother, Harold Alfred Llewellyn, a Lieutenant Of the 8th Service Battalion of South Wales Borderers died at Salonika, Greece on 14 June 1916. Evan Bevan Watkins, Esq. of Bronllys Court died 9 April 1866. He was married to Gwenllian Parry of Broyn Llis. They have a daughter Mary Jane Gwenllian (b.1858). His nephew Lewis Watkins, Esq. (fl. 1861-1868) was the executor of his estate. John Maybery (d. 1784) married Anne Wilkins, daughter of John Wilkins, the deputy prothonotary of the Brecon circuit of the Court of Great Sessions. Their son, Thomas Maybery (1759-1829), succeeded his uncle, William Wilkins (d. 1812), as prothonotary of the Brecon circuit. His eldest son, Walter Maybery (1800-1862), was the last to hold that office. Walter married Diana Middleton Phillips and they have a daughter, Julia Martha Diana. She married Charles William Best of Penbryn, a civil engineer in 1880. They had a son, Charles Walter Maybery Best. Thomas Maybery's second son, Henry Maybery, was treasurer of Brecknockshire and deputy-registrar of the Brecon Consistory Court. He became the head of the firm of Maybery, Williams, and Cobb, who were the successors of the firm of solicitors Walter and John Powell, later Powell, Jones, and Powell. David Williams, Evan Thomas and Molyneux Francis Thomas are a firm of solicitors in Brecon. Their clients include William Symonds Bass of Berkely House, the Breconshire Territorial Army Association, Mary Jane Brown of Newmarch Street, Mary Davies Of Glannant (nee Williams of Castle Madoc), Games family of Glasfryn, Pritchard family of Cardiff and Mary Elizabeth Thomas of Brecon. Hugh Powell of Castle Madoc, was High Sheriff in 1666. He married Catherine Vaughan of Merthyr in 1655. Their son and heir, Charles Powell married Elizabeth Gwyn of Llanelwedd. Their eldest son Hugh Powell (1683-1749) became the High Sheriff in 1712. He married Margarett Thomas of Thomas Talwen-fawr. She was the cousin and heir to Howell Lewis of Talwen. Their eldest son, Charles Powel became the High Sheriff in 1738. He married Catherine Penry of Cefnbrith. Their eldest daughter, Catherine died in 1799 and left the estate to her cousin Rev. Hugh Price of Little Illford and Rettendon, Essex. He was the eldest son of her aunt, Penelope Price of Llangamarch. She was the only daughter of Hugh and Margaret Powel of Castle Madoc. Hugh Price's son, also called Hugh Price (d. 1856) came to the estate in 1803 and was the High Sheriff in 1815. He married Sophia Juliana Bulama, daughter of the late Francis Brodie. Their son Hugh Powell Price was the present owner of Castle Madoc. Castle Madoc was originally built by Thomas ap Howel in 1588 and continued to be occupied by his male descendants until 1796, when Charles Powel died and left it to his unmarried daughter, Catherine. Hugh Powell Powel of Castle Madoc died 26 May 1907. He was married to Margaret Emily Grizel Powel. Howell Harvard, (fl. 1879-1903) of Finsbury Park, cowkeeper, had properties in Defynnog, Brecknockshire, and Hackney Wick, Middlesex. Catherine Constance Mills of Ty'r-bryn, Talgarth died 31 October 1926. Lewis Powell (fl. 1834-1855) of John St, Berkley Square was a surgeon in London. His uncle was John Powell of Senny-Bridge, Devynock. Charles Vaughan of Skethrog, Llansanfraed, was the son and heir of Hugh Powell, clerk, late 'Presentor' of Saint Davids. He married Rebecka Price Killmery [Cilmeri], Llanganten, daughter and heir of William Price and Posthuma. Their eldest son and heir was Charles Vaughan the Younger of Skethrog (fl. 1765-1785). John Jones the Elder (fl. 1804-1831) of Brynbrain, Carmarthenshire was married to Jane. Their children were Evan, Gwen, John of Dolaucothy and Jonah. Jonah died 17 October 1880, leaving a widow, Sarah, and 3 daughters. Sarah died 27 May 1882 and administration was granted to one of her daughters, Jane, wife of Rees Williams. David Morgan of Ystradgynlais, a farmer was the administrator for his son John Morgan of Garth who died 15 February 1860. His children were Thomas of Ynysbodafe, Howell of Llwynturnor, Daniel, Elizabeth of Garth, David and Rachel of Werngafaele, wife of Evan Williams. Howel Morgan of Llwynturnor died 16 April 1884 and his property was divided between his brother Daniel and sister Elizabeth. Daniel Morgan died 20 April 1885 and his property was transferred to his nephew Rees Williams. Rees Williams of Memorial College, Brecon was offered pastorship at Congregational Chapel, Devynock, in 1882. Reverend Rees Williams of Tirwern died 3 July 1937. His wife, Mary Anne Williams, daughter of Samuel Griffiths of Wern Cottage and Anne Griffiths, was the administrator. Velinnewydd is in the parish of Llandefalle. The Games family owned land in Brecknockshire and Radnorshire during the 19th century. William Games of Brecon was a solicitor. D. W. E. Thomas and M. F. Thomas were solicitors based in Brecon. |
